PURPOSES OF PRACTICUM

The purpose of this practicum becomes an effective way for me especially I am taking Bachelor's degree for Teaching Education. According to the SEMEO Sea Teacher Program, this aims to provide opportunity for pre-service student teachers from universities in Southeast Asia to have teaching experiences (practicum) in schools in other countries in Southeast Asia, where in I could totally say that this proram really helped me a lot to become more effective teacher someday. Experiencing different cultures made me to become understanding and aware to the people around me. The purpose stands as my eye opener and an opportunity to show and share what I have, and at the same time, to accept also some suggestions that I am sure, can lead me to success.

PROCEDURES OF PRACTICUM

When I arrived in Indonesia, that was weekend, I prepared myself for the meeting for upcoming days. Monday, I was oriented by the school and also by my cooperating teacher.

I was given 2 hours of teaching every Wednesdays and Thursdays from class A to class F but then, the good thing is that, I only have one preparation per week. My first teaching, I was not told to have my lesson plan, instead, the teaching plan of my cooperating teacher was given to me and all I have to do is to deliver it, so I think it went well too.

My class starts at 8:30AM and sometimes ended at 12:00PM, it depends upon my cooperating teacher if he wants me to assist him in class or I will be the one to fully handle the class.

OUTCOMES OF THE PRACTICUM

The outcome of the practicum went well. With the help of the guidance of my cooperating teacher, I became good perhaps. In giving instructions, creating my teaching plan, from the delivery to the end, I was guided by him. That made me become good in front of my students especially as I monitor their learning, I can see that progress is very visible because of my delivery.

Also, upon doing my teaching, there are also many things I learned from them and from my coordinators who helped through out the time. I am very thankful that I was not left behind especially it is really hard to teach in a different culture and environment, but then, in the end, I  can totally say that all of my teaching hour and stay in school was successful.

THE CHALLENGES OF PRACTICUM

The challenges I encountered during my stay in Indonesia as well as in teaching, are; one is the language barrier, second is the teaching hour. Language barrier is one of the hardest things I encountered most of the time, of course, it is really hard to communicate if you can't understand each other. Especially in the teaching-learning process, it is hard to share and deliver the lesson if only few can understand you. Next is the teaching hour, my theaching hour consist of 2 hours per class. It would be hard for me to cope with this situation since in Philippines, normally, we only have 1 hour per subject in class so i found it hard whenever I am writing my teaching my plan. But after all, I still delivered my lesson even we are diverse in language and culture, and even I have two hours of teaching. It still went well and succesful.

OVERALL IMPRESSION

Being in this program is really satisfying and fulfilling. I am very lucky that I became one the participants of SEA Teacher Progeam knowing that it would help me to develop my strength as well as my weaknesses. SMP Khadijah and UNUSA became a bridge for me to take my first step in reaching my dreams. The students of SMP Khadijah made me feel that I am really in teaching. They are very appreciative and active. I would not ask anything for more. All in all, everything was so smooth and good.

SUGGESTIONS

As one of the participants of the SEA Teacher Program, and experienced the program too, I suggest to retain and continue what you have started. I am very amazed with this program thinking that many aspiring student teachers will become more well-developed and work-ready for wherever they wanted to work and spend their life. That moment you became a bridge to make us experience all of this proves how good this program is.

Spending my time in Indonesia for one month was very memorable and extremely amazing but then, as time goes by, I realized that one month is really fast and short. It would be better if one month becomes two, or more in order to be fully exposed in a different culture and environment. But then, the program still handles lots of opportunities for those people who wanted to become efficient and effective teacher someday. Keep up the good work SEA Teacher!
